The Girl in the Mirror by Rose Carlyle

Oh man. I don’t even know where to begin to unpack this book. It’s the ultimate game of clue- winner takes all. In a oddly structured, blended family, the death of the patriarch leaves both sadness, and a bizarre will, behind.

Getting to know the characters in this novel was seriously wonderful. The dynamic storytelling, and the lead-up to the twist is insane. You will seriously not be able to put this one down.

I really enjoyed the themes of self-reflection, and the grass not always being greener on the other side, and things and people not being what they seem throughout this novel. It is so well played, and it is so relatable in terms of relationships.

This is my first Rose Carlyle novel, and I can honestly say it will not be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed her writing. Her characters all had such depth and dimension. She dangled the plot in front of you, like a carrot on a stick, and she keeps the pages turning with her seriously devious, suspenseful, twists. I am so please with my October BOTM selection. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Swing and a Mishap by Tara Sivec

How Tara Sivec manages to write books that are funny, real, sexy, and romantic is beyond me. But oh my goodness… this book is the total package.
I absolutely adore Wren, and getting to know her throughout the book. She is such a strong, spunky, brave character. I absolutely cheered for her growth throughout the book, and the final chapters did not disappoint. She found her voice in such an empowering way.
Shepard was sarcastic and fun. His love of glitter and crafting was a pretty adorable characteristic. And the fact that he loves Wren and Owen so completely and is not afraid of making that known, is incredible.
I very much enjoyed the sassy banter and charming wit within these pages. Who knew being a baseball player could be so much fun? Middle field is one hell of a position.
The writing is great, the internal dialogue is funny, and the storyline is simply sexy Disney. I loved the way the journey was splayed out, and I really appreciate that Tara doesn’t shy away from the grittiness and complications that arise within a relationship. Her characters all have such big, dynamic personalities, and they are all so well rounded, but also such hot messes, it is very relatable. I really enjoyed this one. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Final thoughts: who knew vanilla ice cream was sexy?

Kiss my Putt by Tara Sivec

This is the first book from Tara Sivec I’ve read, and it will not be the last. She is damn talented. Not only is this love story epic… she is freaking hilarious. I don’t think I have ever cackled so much reading a book in my life.
I loved the characters. Birdie is seriously the belle of the ball and she is so well written. Her inner dialogue is almost funnier than her actual dialogue. And Tess… oh my GOD. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a book character as a friend more. Palmer is fun and exciting, and charismatic as all get out. I love how this story unfolded. Love is messy, it’s complicated… and it’s hard. You definitely go through all the feelings with this book.

This is a delightfully charming, fast paced book. You will absolutely fall in love with Summersweet Island, and the characters who live there. The writing is so clever, there is so much wit and sass and charm. And the female characters are so damn delightful. This was an excellent choice.
There are some killer one liners in this book. Oh man. I had to take screen shots of some of my favs to post to my Instagram story because Tara is such a sassy, witty, clever writer. This was such a fun read. It was so refreshing to read such a positive, upbeat book. Even in tense, dramatic moments there were beautiful twists that just worked. If you are looking for a quick, easy to read book- this is it. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter

Holy hell in a hand-basket. This book is insane. Vivid details, exquisite storytelling and a twist that will leave you stunned and speechless. I highly recommend reading this book with a friend, because I guarantee you are going to need to discuss this book and THE TWIST. This book proves that money doesn’t buy happiness, old wounds can be ripped open and the truth is ugly. Don’t plan on getting any sleep… cause you will not be able to put this book down. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

The Better Choice by Kiersten Modglin

A modern day fairytale told in a way that only Kiersten can pull off. This story was so beautiful. Change mixed with heartache and grief, topped with healing and growth is a powerful and ambitious task to take on, and it was executed in such a realistic and careful way. I found myself cheering for Blythe, and until t-h-e twist… I didn’t know who I wanted to be THE guy. I definitely did not see the shocking twist coming, but it played out is such a magically perfect manner. The descriptions of how Blythe felt moving to New York from her small hometown made me feel as though I were standing in her (Blythe’s) shoes. This is a tale that definitely proves that having it all, is oftentimes not nearly as charming as assumed, and that second chances are worth it. I really enjoyed this book, and I really enjoyed the characters and their journeys. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

…and they lived happily ever after… cue the happy tears

The Ghost Writer by Alessandra Torre

*Trigger warning, this book has explicit content that may be unsuitable for some people*

Read 9/23/2020-9/26/2020

This is a heavy, heavy book. It has a lot of weight and sadness and anger and vengeance and remorse and conflict… and forgiveness. This was so beautifully written. Heartbreakingly honest and brutally transparent. When we are first introduced to Helena, we see a successful, controlling, assertive woman who is used to getting what she wants and who does not hesitate to keep every ounce of human interaction at arms length. She is purposefully cruel enough that people don’t want to get to know or spend time with her. Helena is such a dynamic, complicated, complex and sincerely brave character. She is smart; alarmingly so. She has a razor sharp wit that will cut you to the core and an ability to make even the slightest comments hurt. She is fiercely protective, loyal and scared. The transformation her character takes across these pages is so incredible. She takes herself from victim to hero, she takes the power back for those who didn’t get the opportunity. She is an advocate, a force to be reckoned with. Mark was such a necessary and appropriate character, and he was just what Helena needed in her final novel. Their unconventional friendship starts out as competing authors and ends with the two of them having such a powerful understanding of each other’s pain. The support they give to each other, and the amount of weight they remove from each other is tragically beautiful. The last few chapters of Helena (and Mark’s) final novel contain a massive revelation and a twist that I did not see coming… and that nothing could have prepared me for. The last several chapters of this book will make you angry, sad, and they will make you cry. Helena is humanized to us in the final pages of this book… which is something you will find yourself yearning for throughout majority of this novel… but when it finally happens, when we finally get Helena to take down her walls… your heart will break. Again, and again, and again. Beautifully written, dynamically put together, and a truly wonderful story. Alessandra Torre writes about very heavy and hard topics with such a delicate touch, but she gives the respect to those who deserve it. I absolutely recommend this book. This is my first Alessandra Torre novel, and I can assure you that it will not be my last. This book came to me via a recommendation from Tarryn Fisher through her Instagram stories, and I am so glad I chose to read this novel. These words, this journey, the ups and downs, the twists and turns… the emotions creates are truly wonderful. This book is #katyapproved. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

My Husband’s Secret by Kiersten Modglin

Read 9/14/20-9/15/20

Secrets are dangerous and this book makes that super clear. The twists, the turns, and the eventual revelation of truth are so beautifully written. This is a page turner, and just when you think you have figured everything out-you realize you have no idea. Can we really know someone?Kiersten Modglin writes a brutally tragic story, filled with hurt, hope and secrets… A journey that will leave you exhausted, a trip that will make you angry, sad, confused, and in the end will blow your mind. Sit down, buckle up and try to hold on. You are in for a ride. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Too Late by Colleen Hoover

Read 9/4/2020-9/7/2020

Trigger warning: For readers who might be triggered by sensitive subject matter, this book contains scenes which depict rape, murder and other graphic violence.

This book deals with some heavy things, and it has some fairly dark parts. But it was written so eloquently and so lovingly. This book opens our eyes to how truly desperate a person can feel, when they feel they have no options but to make it work in their current situation, regardless of how bad that situation may be. We meet very damaged, but very well developed characters in this book. We see the absolute brutal ugliness that can rest within a persons soul, and we see the light that can be redeemed, should a person want to change. We meet Sloan, who is strong, brave, smart, charismatic and so damaged from a long life of disappointment. Sloan, who is not looking for anyone to save her but herself, finds out that true love waits for no one. Worlds collide and things get dangerous. Colleen Hoover has such a magical way of weaving her stories and gripping our hearts and minds. I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Colleen Hoover wrote an extra epilogue for this book and it provides the most beautiful closure ever. If you’re not following her on Facebook you definitely should be!!!! This book is beautiful, and such a complete story. I further stand by my 5 star rating!!

Man…F@#K!: The Honest Reality of Entrepreneurship by Rod F. Marchand

Read 9/04/2020

Such a positive, fun and inspirational journey. Rod F. Marchand has such a fun personality and it leaps off the pages as he shares his hard-earned experience with us. It was truly amazing reading about the highs and lows Rod and his family has endured while building their business, It is impossible to finish this book and not feel inspired.

I know the Marchand family personally, Chelsey is one of my best friends, and it was pretty awesome reading about her dad witnessing how amazing she was while working at another retail store before he convinced her to come work for him. I am proud to say Chelsey was working with me, as my assistant manager. She is incredibly talented and has a gift for working with the public.

I am so excited for the Marchand family as they tackle their mattress venture and I have no doubt that Rod, Quincy and Spencer will lead them into greatness. I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
