I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.

K.L. Slater, or Kim, is the number one bestselling author of sixteen psychological crime thrillers. She has sold over two million copies of her books worldwide. She has also written four Carnegie-nominated Young Adult novels as Kim Slater for Macmillan Children’s Books. Kim has an MA in Creative Writing and lives with her husband in a small Nottinghamshire village.

My husband’s dead. She’s at my door. She owns my home…

The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her buttery blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms.

As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts.

She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I know this will be hard to hear. But I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.’

My world implodes. And then she tells me that she owns our home – and that she’s not going anywhere…

“There’s a solution for every problem. You just have to be creative enough to find it.”

Jennifer thinks she has a perfect life. An up-and-coming husband lavishes the family with anything they could want, two beautiful children and a solid marriage. Her husband suddenly dies, and she gets a knock on the door.

Holy buckets. This was intense from page one. I enjoyed the multiple narrators and perspectives; it made the storyline smooth.

The characters were well done. Jennifer seemed like a calm, collected, caring mom. Sara was immature and secretive. Miller was a brooding teenager with secrets. Sylvie was innocent, caught in the crossfire.

This story was wild. From start to finish, the twists kept coming. When the big reveal happened, I was shocked. And as the punches kept coming, I didn’t know what to do except keep reading.

K.L. Slater is a gifted storyteller, and the madness packed into this book will leave your jaw on the floor. I devoured this book in a single sitting because I could not put it down- once things started to unravel, I had to find out what happened.

This was such a well-executed house of cards. The way pieces of information are dribbled in, while seemingly unimportant but coming back with a bang, was brilliant. This was emotional turmoil at its finest!
