Dr. Lucinda Berry is a former clinical psychologist and leading researcher in childhood trauma. Now, she spends her days writing full-time, where she uses her clinical experience to blur the line between fiction and nonfiction. She enjoys taking her readers on a journey through the dark recesses of the human psyche. Her work has been optioned for film and translated into multiple languages. If Berry isn’t chasing after her son, you can find her running through Los Angeles, prepping for her next marathon.

Emily and Elizabeth spend their childhood locked in a bedroom and terrorized by a mother who drinks too much and disappears for days. The identical twins are rescued by a family determined to be their saviors.
But there’s some horrors love can’t erase…
Elizabeth wakes in a hospital, strapped to her bed and unable to move or speak. The last thing she remembers is finding Emily’s body in their bathroom. Days before, she was falling in love and starting college. Now, she’s surrounded by men who talk to themselves and women who pull out their eyebrows.
As she delves deeper into the mystery surrounding Emily’s death, she discovers shocking secrets and holes in her memory that force her to remember what she’s worked so hard to forget—the beatings, the blood, the special friends. Her life spins out of control at a terrifying speed as she desperately tries to unravel the psychological puzzle of her past before it’s too late.
This is a new release of an edition originally published by Rise Press.

“And I didn’t. I hadn’t. And I wouldn’t.”

Elizabeth and Emily are identical twins who have survived atrocities no child should ever endure. Growing up, they held their secrets inside and tried to live their lives. When Elizabeth wakes up in the hospital with no memory of how she got there, her focus is on the last thing she remembers, Emily dying. Elizabeth wants to lay her twin to rest and get out of the hospital. Until her therapist tells her that Emily died two years ago, and she attended her sister’s funeral. Now, Elizabeth doesn’t know who to trust because nothing feels real.

Oh, dang it, Lucinda Berry! This was such a good book! And Kate Marcin was fantastic as the narrator. Her performance was spot on.

I enjoyed this book so much. I loved the complexities and the twists. Berry has the incredible ability to bring mental and emotional issues to life with the most vivid of details.

I enjoyed how this story played out. I also liked the various characters. Their quirks and personalities were so unique, and their varying diagnosis were all well covered.

Sometimes o forget that Lucinda was a psychologist. Until her characters start being broken down in a way that no other writer could manage. The detail, the performance, and the results are simply *chefs kiss* perfect.

The twists in the book. Oh, man… I listened to this mainly while driving, and there were a few times when I had to remind myself that I was driving because I was floored by some revelation.

I have listened to or read just about every novel Berry has released, and she continues to catch me hook, line, and sinker.
