I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.
Emily Fluke is a Congenital Heart Defect survivor, and she finds joy and peace through the expression of writing. She is a strong believer that all stories need a little magic and a lot of excitement. Emily and her husband spend their free time wrangling two children and playing video games in their busy California lifestyle. Otherwise, you’ll find Emily solving an escape room, running, or writing Magic the Gathering-based poetry.
“What in the portal-hallucinating-insanity is this?”
Mari just gave birth to her first child. A daughter, she named Wendy. Her birthday was anything but easy, and her husband Kai could vouch. When a string is mysterious murders happen, the investigative journalist gets drawn in. But now, Mari may be too close to this story.
This was not my typical genre. I tend to avoid anything supernatural or in the fantasy realm. That being said, I did enjoy this book.
It’s written in a very easy-to-read manner, and we spend the majority of the book getting to know Mari and Kai. Their connection is lovely, and with Wendy, their little family has started.
I enjoyed the parallels with some of the classic fairytales we all know, and I enjoyed the twist. You can sense the Once Upon a Time vibe, but this was a bit edgier. I’ve never seen Supernatural; I tried- and could not get into it, but I’m guessing there are parallels to that realm as well.
I think fantasy fans will enjoy this modern retelling. The action is good. And the story has room to grow. This is just the beginning for Mari and Kai.
