I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Miranda Rijks is possible a fascinating woman alive. She studied handwriting analysis and published a self-help book shortly after. She writes about what she knows and infused everything she creates with tidbits of her personal history. She enjoyed creating works of fiction about the things that fascinate her the most, and after surviving a rare form of cancer, she embraces her life and enjoys every moment.

“I would never knowingly take a person’s life. Surely, I wouldn’t.”

Hannah and Daniel live a charmed life. Daniel is a prominent surgeon, and Hannah is a stay at home mom who just opened her very own short term vacation rental on their property. When their second renter shows up, Hannah is put off but determined to wow this small family and earning a stellar review for her baby business. When a random accident leaves one of her renters with a broken leg, things quickly take a turn for the worst. Hannah is woken up in the middle of the night by Nadia, the group’s wife renting the barn, screaming for help. Now, Hannah is caught in a potentially deadly game of cat and mouse. Only, we aren’t sure who is the cat and who is the mouse.

I’ve never read anything by Miranda Rijks, but boy, I will be adding everything she has ever written to my to be read list. This book is beautifully written.

The plot is so well developed. The characters are so well-formed, the descriptions are so vivid you can see the scenes almost jumping from the page. The story builds reasonably quickly, and when the hook hit, we are left thinking, okay, surely it won’t get any worse from here.

Wrong. Assumption. Things quickly go from bad to worse, to deadly in rapid succession.

Hannah stays home and cares for the children and the home, and her newest project: the barn rental. She desperately wants her business to be a success. Her husband doesn’t take her seriously, but he humors her until he notices a large charge to their credit card.

Hannah is portrayed as a meek, safe, docile character throughout the majority of the book. But she has incredible strength and wit and an unyielding desire to figure out just what happened that night.

This book is intense. You will never believe the things that happen, and the twists keep coming. You will never guess what will happen, and even when you think you’ve figured it out-you will be wrong. The ending will leave your jaw on the floor and your pulse racing.

If you are a thriller fan, this book is for you. I devoured this ARC in a single sitting. A matter of hours, and once I finished, my heart was racing for a solid 30 minutes after. Read this book. But be warned- you will never see it coming.
