I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Arlene Lomazoff-Marron retired in 2019, and after being told she should do something from her bucket list, she decided to write a novel. Beneath a Blanket of Snow is her debut novel.

“The house was a showcase.”

In her novel debut, Arlene Lomazoff-Martin has written a book that genuinely makes you think. It forces you to put things into perspective, and it changes you.

We meet several individual women dealing with various issues in their seemingly perfect, upper-class lives.

This novel is profound and deals in themes of forgiveness, compassion, self-reflection, growth, and confidence. When Meredith’s world is flipped upside down by her husband being arrested for embezzlement and tax fraud, she isn’t sure she can go on. She hasn’t worked in almost 15 years, she hasn’t had to worry about the day to day financial situation for her household, and she certainly hasn’t had to worry about being able to pay the mortgage.

When her husband is sentenced to prison, she has no one but herself to rely on. Her friends are missing in action; not one has reached out to see how she is doing. Meredith has to find herself. Despite the image of having it, all her lifestyle has allowed her to show.

Elissa has to figure out how to communicate with her husband and find a way to help herself before she wastes away to nothing.

Secrets, deceit, and a harsh dose of reality face these women of leisure. Their comfortable lives quickly get flipped around, and they are left floundering with no one to save them but themselves. Learning to stand on your own feet is never easy, but when you have children relying on you die stability, what other option is there?

I enjoyed this novel. It is deep, it is heavy, but it has some incredible insight. I sat at my desk and looked at my life. This book will make you think, it will make you angry, it will make you sad, and it will change how you perceive everything you thought you knew—a beautiful debut from an insightful new author. I will definitely be reading Arlene’s next novel.
